MISSION
The UDF was launched on 20 August 1983 in Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town. It united diverse organisations to fight apartheid under the rallying call: UDF Unites, Apartheid Divides.
Through mass mobilisation, the UDF empowered students, workers, and communities to take action. Its strategies of unity, non-violence, and inclusion became a blueprint for the liberation movement. Today, we draw from this rich heritage to address modern challenges and build a South Africa that reflects these enduring principles.
On 20 August 2023, we marked 40 years since the UDF’s formation. This milestone celebrated the UDF's pivotal role in South Africa’s struggle for freedom. Events across the country honoured fallen leaders and reflected on the UDF’s ethos to inspired present generations to carry forward its values through ‘active citizenry and accountability’.
The UDF's legacy reminds us of the power of our collective action and our responsibility to defend our democracy.
